When I heard “Somos Sur,” a collaboration between producer Rava Ortiz and singer Dru Flecha, I had a very specific image in my head: Dru putting on an incredible outfit, doing her makeup, taking one last breath before a show… only to step outside into her grandmother’s backyard.
I came up with the concept, wrote the script, and directed the music video around that reveal.
An audience of seven. A performance for thousands.
Because I remember being a kid and getting very dressed up to go absolutely nowhere. You were just going outside, but in your head the afternoon had a full production budget.
You made your family sit down for a show. You performed like there were thousands watching. And halfway through, somebody got up to get another slice of pizza.
That’s the energy I wanted for Dru. She treats her backyard performance with complete conviction.
Around her, the kids run off, her friends dance, and her grandmother is somehow both her biggest fan and the person telling her to lower the volume because of the neighbors.
And somehow, the show still feels huge.
I love that interruption. It brings us straight back to the house, to the family, to the actual scale of the afternoon.
“Somos Sur” by Rava Ortiz featuring Dru Flecha is out now. This one was an absolute joy to make.
